It’s a good time to include a coupon

Two recent studies found that in light of challenging economic times, more people are planning to use coupons to save money. According to a study from ICOM, 67 percent of respondents said they are much more likely, or somewhat more likely, to use coupons during an economic downturn. An additional study conducted by Harris Interactive reported that 63 percent of respondents said they would not make a purchase if there was no deal attached.

These studies make a great argument for offering a coupon or two in your email campaigns. Using coupons is a great way to motivate the individuals on your list who are focused on saving to choose your products or services over your competitor’s.

Another benefit of coupons, no matter what the state of the economy, is that success is easily measured. You always know how much business a coupon campaign brings in. And according to an article in DMNews, coupons can also drive long-term business (in case you were wondering).

Do you have plans to use coupons in upcoming promotions? Have you had some good results lately? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Share them below!

Offering Coupons
I do offer a coupon in every mailing I send out. It is pretty much the reason for my email newsletters, to get customers back in the store sooner then they might otherwise have returned. I do find that there is a difficulty offering coupons in emails. Sometimes people have a printer problem or are using a laptop not connected to a printer and sometimes they just have trouble figuring out how to print the coupon (I include instructions for printing out just the coupon - ie: highlight and choose "print selection" from the print dialog) or even the email itself. To solve this issue I have qualified the offer with the option to just mention they newsletter and give us their email at the time of redemption so we can record it on the receipt (for tracking). This seems to work much better, people know they don't have to print it, clip it and remember to bring it with them but they can still get the benefit.
