Rumors are just rumors…right?

That is until they become reality (and they almost always do), especially in the Facebook world.

There is a new rumor flooding the Internet that Facebook is about to implement a hashtag feature. The Wall Street Journal reported on this stating:

Facebook is working on incorporating the hashtag, one of Twitter’s most iconic markers, into its service by using the symbol as a way to group conversations, said people familiar with the matter. It is unclear how far along Facebook’s work on the hashtag is and the feature isn’t likely to be introduced imminently, these people said.

I believe Facebook hashtags would be a bad idea.

Do hashtags belong on Facebook?

One of my favorite things about social media is the different “languages” you speak depending on the social platform. You can have the same message on both Facebook and Twitter, but the way you craft them relies on the fact that each audience is different. Facebook adopting hashtags blurs the lines too much for my liking.

The best thing about Twitter and Facebook being two separate audiences is the motivation it gave marketers to create unique content for each individual channel. The adoption of hashtags on Facebook has the potential to discourage creativity.

Would Facebook cause hashtag overload?

There are a lot of things I like about Facebook. On the top of the list was the “we’re better than you” attitude of not using hashtags. Almost every social network has adopted the hashtag with the exception of Facebook, who seemed to be standing their ground…well, until now!

The small business owner is very busy—with little time to figure out each and every new trend. I know there are many time-starved small business owners who have felt overwhelmed with the thought of hashtags in general. And (if the rumor is true) hashtags will create a new way to think about posting Facebook content.

Do Facebook hashtags make sense?

Sure, there are definitely benefits to Facebook adopting the hashtag. Almost every TV show now displays a hashtag allowing you to have a “second screen” experience. Facebook hashtags would now allow you to carry-on that experience to Facebook, but why? Do you really want to see every single thing your aunt was thinking as she was watching Shark Tank?

The upside to Facebook hashtags

Hashtags on Facebook could potentially allow marketers to reach more audiences, and this is the only true upside I can see to the rumor. Hashtags allow for social discovery by allowing the user to search for specific interests and this could open the doors for your audience that wouldn’t step foot onto the Twitter-sphere.
