Just north of London, Ontario, in the small village of Arva, stands St. John’s Arva Church<\/a>, an Anglican parish that has long been a cornerstone of its community. Once surrounded by farmland, Arva has gradually evolved into a community of long-time residents and city families seeking a quieter life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like many small churches, St. John’s faced the challenge: how to stay connected and relevant in a digital world. Attendance was becoming less regular, and the congregation’s communication methods — mostly printed bulletins and mailed letters — were becoming costly and unsustainable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Melanie Prosser, Administrator at St. John’s and a marketing professional with a background in graphic design, the answer was clear: it was time to move from print to digital. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I suggested that instead of just waiting for people to show up, we send the bulletin out (via email) on Thursdays with a message each week about upcoming events.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A modern solution for an ageing congregation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

St John’s began using Constant Contact about two and a half years ago. What started as a simple digital bulletin has evolved into a central communication hub that helps the church stay in touch with members near and far. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We use it for our weekly bulletin, and we also use it for special announcements,” Melanie explains. “We have several events, and I use it for that as well. Anything I need to email, I use Constant Contact.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the small size of the congregation St. John’s now has a list that includes not only local parishioners, but also former members who have moved away and still want to stay connected. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“People who move away still want to stay in touch with what’s going on in the church,” Melanie says. “So I’ve created several different lists and then people can choose which lists they want to be on.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The results are impressive: St. John’s emails consistently achieve open rates around 77%, which is 31% above the industry average. Engagement is just as impressive. The church enjoys a 21% click rate, 15% higher than typical benchmarks, and a notable click-to-open rate of 21%. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Connection that reaches beyond the village<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For Melanie, those digital connections have become a lifeline for community spirit. One active family that moved to Calgary often sends notes saying, “We just love hearing what’s going on. Thank you — keep sending them,” which motivates her to keep even former congregation members up to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the church recently opened its new St. John’s Café (a collaboration with a local restaurant to serve the community and raise funds), Constant Contact helped get the word out quickly and effectively. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Several people wrote back and said, ‘That’s a great idea!’”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building confidence and embracing change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While some long-time members were hesitant about moving to digital communications, Melanie used the positive feedback she received to help build confidence in the new approach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I was able to say these are the responses we’re getting from far and wide.’ So they’re seeing we’re working hard to keep the church open. It’s like a little positive peer pressure.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This feedback loop has created a stronger, more resilient sense of community. People have come to expect the Thursday bulletin and look forward to it each week, she says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We’re slowly training people to look for upcoming events, and I also have a little section once in a while I call ‘Administration.’ If I have to get a message across, people look for it every Thursday, so it’s good.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The templates are easy to use and the branding’s there,” she says. “It really saves me time.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
