When Lesley Bowen opened L.A.B. Beauty in June 2021, it wasn’t part of a grand business plan. It was, as she laughs, “actually amazing timing.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lesley wasn’t new to the beauty world. Before starting her own business, she had built a strong reputation working with plastic surgeons as a skin consultant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“My background is quite medical. My treatments are quite medical-based, so they’re very results-driven,” she explains. But when it came to opening her own studio, she wanted to create something very different from the sterile, clinical settings she’d worked in for years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lesley’s art-school background is reflected in every corner of her studio: eclectic decor, bold artwork, and an atmosphere that feels more like an artist’s salon than a clinic. Her desire to create an inclusive, welcoming environment became the heart of L.A.B. Beauty<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I kind of call it the anti-medi spa,” she says. “I wanted it to be something a little bit different. Working in the plastic surgery industry, I’m very heavily tattooed, so I looked a lot different compared to the people that work there. I wanted to create a spot for everybody, but especially for girls that look like me.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At its core, L.A.B. Beauty is more than a studio — it’s a community. Lesley sees her business as a small rebellion against the beauty industry’s one-size-fits-all standards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Right now, in the industry, we’re just being bombarded with false imagery of beauty,” she says. “It’s false, it’s fake, and everything online is fake… I want women to know that they don’t have to look that way to be beautiful.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Balancing growth and authenticity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Despite her early success, Lesley faced a challenge familiar to so many solo entrepreneurs: growing without burning out. Juggling appointments, training programs, client communication, and marketing all by herself showed her she needed tools to help her work smarter while preserving the personal touch her clients love. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’m a one-woman show, I do everything,” she says. “Sometimes it’s just a lot.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The results speak for themselves: L.A.B. Beauty has grown their subscriber base 18% year over year, with 98% of new signups coming from that website pop-up alone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lesley’s email campaigns consistently outperform industry benchmarks, with an overall open rate 20% above average and her personal open rate at 56%. Engagement continues to climb, with a click rate of 6% — up 5% from the previous 12 months. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Lesley, Constant Contact keeps everything organized and templates keep her messaging looking professional and polished. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I try to add value to my emails, instead of being: Here’s a promo, give me your money<\/em>,” she says. “Constant Contact is good in terms of keeping me organized. I like the calendar set up. I also like the different formats it has for layouts of emails. I feel like that’s what keeps people opening them.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That same sense of care extends beyond her treatment room. L.A.B. Beauty regularly supports causes like the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) and The Shoebox Project, donating skincare products and handwritten notes to women in need. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Every couple months I also make a donation to a cause that I think is really important.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now four years into running L.A.B. Beauty, Lesley is thinking about her next chapter — from training more students in aesthetics to eventually teaching internationally<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’m not someone who’s a gatekeeper. I want to share everything that I’ve learned so other people can be successful,” she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
