A few days later, a regular customer tells you they would’ve taken you up on it, but they only noticed your email after finding it in Gmail’s Promotions tab. How many other customers missed it, too?

That’s frustrating, especially when people have signed up to hear from you. But there’s an important distinction: Promotions is still part of the inbox, not the spam folder. Some subscribers even prefer keeping their deals and newsletters separate from personal emails. And while you can take steps to improve how your emails perform, there’s no guaranteed way to get them into Gmail’s Primary tab.

Instead, focus on helping subscribers recognize, find, and engage with your messages, wherever they prefer to receive them. In this guide, we’ll explain how Gmail sorts emails, walk through simple steps to improve your sending practices, and show you how to make the most of the Promotions tab when your emails land there.

What is the Gmail Promotions Tab?

The Gmail Promotions tab is an inbox category where Gmail automatically organizes marketing emails, including newsletters, special offers, discounts, and sales announcements. It keeps promotional messages separate from personal emails, making it easier for users to manage their inboxes.

Why do your emails end up in the Gmail Promotions tab?

Gmail uses machine learning to sort incoming messages based on several factors, including the sender, email content, and how recipients have interacted with similar messages in the past. That’s why the same marketing email might appear in Primary for one subscriber and Promotions for another.

With Gmail’s Default inbox layout, messages are organized into five categories:

Primary: Personal emails and messages that don’t fit into other categories.

Promotions: Marketing messages and special offers.

Social: Messages from social networks and media-sharing sites.

Updates: Confirmations, notifications, bills, and reminders.

Forums: Messages from online groups and discussion boards.

So why does this matter for your business? When new-mail notifications are enabled in Gmail’s categorized inbox, they generally cover messages in Primary, not Promotions. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll miss your message. Some people like checking Promotions when they’re ready to browse offers, without having those emails compete with personal messages in Primary.

Primary vs. Promotions vs. Spam: What’s the difference?

Before changing where your emails land, make sure you understand what each placement means. Primary and Promotions are both part of Gmail’s inbox, while Spam is a separate folder for potentially unwanted or suspicious messages.

Location

What it means

What to do

Primary

Gmail placed your message alongside personal and other uncategorized emails.

Monitor how subscribers respond to your emails.

Promotions

Your email reached the inbox but was categorized as promotional.

Encourage engagement and let interested subscribers move your emails to Primary.

Spam

Gmail classified the message as potentially unwanted or suspicious.

Check authentication, spam complaints, subscriber permission, and list quality.

Remember, landing in Promotions isn’t a deliverability failure. Your email reached the inbox, and if subscribers engage with it there, you don’t need to worry about getting into Primary.

If your emails consistently land in Spam, though, you’ll need to address that problem as soon as possible. Our guide on keeping your emails out of spam explains what to check and how to improve your sending practices.

How to improve your email visibility in Gmail

Now that you know the difference, let’s focus on what you can control. While there’s no guaranteed way to reach Primary, these seven steps can improve email visibility, support good sending practices, and encourage subscribers to engage with your messages, regardless of which tab they appear in.

Step 1: Authenticate your sending domain

Before worrying about Gmail’s tabs, make sure your emails can reach the inbox in the first place. Email authentication helps mailbox providers (MBPs) like Gmail verify that messages really come from your business. It doesn’t determine whether you land in Primary or Promotions, but unauthenticated emails are more likely to be marked as spam or rejected.

Three email authentication methods help establish that trust:

SPF (Sender Policy Framework): Lists the servers authorized to send emails on behalf of your domain.

DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail): Adds a digital signature to verify that your email is authentic and hasn’t been altered.

DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance): Checks that authentication aligns with your sending domain and tells inbox providers how to handle messages that fail.

Under Google’s email sender guidelines, all senders must use SPF or DKIM. Businesses sending around 5,000 or more messages per day to personal Gmail accounts must use all three. Google recommends implementing all three regardless of your sending volume.

If you’re using Constant Contact, we’ve already handled SPF authentication for emails sent through our platform. To authenticate your business domain, we’ll provide the DKIM setup details and DMARC information to add through your domain provider. You can then verify the setup in your account.

Constant Contact’s Advanced settings page lets you start the email self-authentication process for your business domain. According to Google’s sender guidelines, your display name should clearly identify you rather than advertise your latest offer.

A couple of habits can help:

Include your business name: In the From name field, use something customers recognize, such as “Oak Street Books.” You could also include an employee’s name, like “Maya at Oak Street Books.”

Keep the name familiar: Avoid changing sender names often, using vague labels like “Marketing Team,” or replacing your business name with promotional messages.

For example, mattress brand Endy uses “Alina from Endy” as its sender name, alongside the email address hello@endy.com. This makes the sender feel more personal while keeping the business name immediately recognizable.

Endy uses “Alina from Endy” as its sender name, combining a personal name with its brand identity. Image source: Author’s inbox.

Before sending your next campaign, send a test email to yourself and check how your sender name appears in Gmail. Remember, this is different from your email address, which subscribers can view separately.

Step 3: Pay attention to your subject lines and email content

Gmail considers message content when categorizing emails, but Google doesn’t publish a formula for getting into Primary. Removing images, cutting links, or avoiding particular promotional words won’t guarantee a different placement.

Instead, focus on creating emails subscribers can understand and want to open:

Avoid spammy-looking subject lines: Skip ALL CAPS, exaggerated claims, excessive punctuation, and strings of emojis. Don’t use “Re:” or “Fwd:” unless you’re genuinely replying to or forwarding a message. Instead, write a subject line that accurately describes your email.

Make your preview text useful: Add information that complements your subject line rather than repeating it. For example, pair “Our October events are here” with “Join us for two workshops and a special guest.”

Send relevant, personalized content: Stick to the topics and offers subscribers signed up for, and tailor your emails to their interests, preferences, or past purchases. If you’re promoting a sale, be upfront about it rather than making the email sound like a personal message.

Make your calls to action (CTAs) clear: Use descriptive text that tells readers where they’re going. For example, “Browse our fall collection” is more helpful than “Click here.” Remove unnecessary links that distract from your main message.

Use images strategically: Include visuals that help explain or showcase your offer, such as a product image or event photo. Keep important details in readable text so subscribers can understand your email even if images don’t load.

These are good practices for readable, trustworthy emails, not a checklist of proven Gmail categorization signals. Google doesn’t specify a maximum number of links, emojis, or images for Primary placement.

Step 4: Separate marketing emails from transactional messages

A customer who purchases something from your business expects a receipt, not another sales pitch. Keeping these communications separate also follows Google’s sending recommendations.

According to Google’s email subscription guidelines, newsletters and promotional campaigns are subscription messages, while purchase receipts and password resets are examples of transactional messages.

Here’s how to organize them:

Use one address for transactional messages: Send purchase receipts, booking confirmations, and similar updates from an address like orders@yourbusiness.com.

Use another for marketing emails: Send newsletters, discounts, and other promotions from an address like news@yourbusiness.com.

Keep receipts focused on the transaction: Include the purchase details customers need rather than adding unrelated promotional offers.

For example, a photography business might use bookings@yourbusiness.com for appointment confirmations and news@yourbusiness.com for seasonal mini-session promotions.

While this won’t force your marketing emails into Primary, it does help keep your different types of communication clearly identified and follows Google’s recommended sending practices.

Step 5: Let subscribers choose where they want your emails

When someone moves a message from Promotions to Primary, they’re showing Gmail where they’d prefer to see your emails. According to Google’s Gmail categorization guide, this helps Gmail learn their preferences and sort future messages more accurately.

But that doesn’t mean you need to ask everyone to move your emails. Some subscribers appreciate having their promotional messages in a separate tab, where they can browse deals and newsletters without cluttering their Primary inbox.

If someone prefers receiving your emails in Primary, they can move them themselves. Here’s how:

On a computer: Drag the email from Promotions to Primary.

In the Gmail mobile app: Open the message, tap the three-dot menu, select “Move to,” and choose “Primary.”

You can share these instructions if a subscriber asks how to find your messages more easily. Otherwise, there’s no need to keep reminding people to move your emails, especially if they’re already opening and engaging with them.

If you still want to help customers recognize your messages and find them more easily, you can include a brief reminder to add your business email address to their contacts (email allowlisting).

For example, Silk & Willow includes a very short note in their email footer asking subscribers to add the business to their contacts or move its messages to Primary if they prefer. It’s a small addition to an existing email rather than a separate campaign asking subscribers to change their inbox settings:

Silk & Willow email footer example. Image source: Author’s inbox.

Tip: Think of yourself as a guest in your subscribers’ inboxes. They’ve invited you to send messages, but how they choose to organize them is up to them. If they’re happy finding your offers in Promotions, that’s a good place to be.

Step 6: Send to the right subscribers at the right pace

Sending more emails doesn’t automatically mean getting more attention. If subscribers receive too many messages they don’t want, they may unsubscribe or mark your emails as spam.

Too many complaints can also affect your sending reputation, which makes managing your audience and sending volume particularly important.

Here’s what to focus on:

Segment your audience: Organize subscribers by interests, purchase history, or previous interactions. For example, a pet store could send dog owners updates about dog products rather than promoting those products to everyone.

Find a manageable sending frequency: Choose a schedule you can maintain and monitor clicks, unsubscribes, and spam complaints to see how subscribers respond. For example, The Flour Girl Bakery & Cafe sends one newsletter per week featuring new flavors, specials, and local events, achieving a 61% open rate. Owner Michelle Nicholson credits part of that success to a consistent weekly schedule and content her customers care about.

Increase your sending volume gradually: If you’re sending from a new domain or returning after a long break, don’t suddenly email thousands of contacts. Start with subscribers who have recently engaged, then expand gradually. Our guide on how to warm up an email domain explains when and how to do this.

Invite genuine replies: Ask questions when customer feedback would be useful. A fitness studio, for example, might ask members which class times they’d prefer and use their answers to plan future sessions.

Google recommends sending to people who want your emails, avoiding sudden volume increases, and keeping spam complaints low.

No universal sending frequency automatically triggers spam filtering. What matters is how recipients respond to your messages and whether you’re following sound sending practices.

Step 7: Check your emails in Gmail before sending

A test email won’t tell you exactly where your campaign will appear for every subscriber, but it can help you catch problems before your message reaches customers.

Send a test to a Gmail account that uses the Default inbox layout, then review the following:

Check the sender details: Make sure your business name and email address appear correctly.

Review the email on desktop and mobile: Look for missing images, broken layouts, awkward preview text, or hard-to-read sections.

Test your links: Open your buttons, website links, and unsubscribe link to confirm they work as expected.

Check where the message appears: Look in Primary, Promotions, and Spam, and note where Gmail placed it.

Use test sends to identify problems and check the subscriber experience, rather than treating them as a reliable measurement of your campaign’s overall Gmail tab placement. If your test email lands in Promotions, that alone isn’t a reason to make changes.

What to do if your emails keep landing in Promotions

Your marketing emails may still appear in Promotions after following the steps above, and that’s perfectly normal. If your subscribers engage with your emails there, you don’t need to change anything just to reach Primary.

Instead, consider how you can use Gmail’s features to help interested subscribers discover your offers.

Understand how Gmail highlights relevant promotions

In September 2025, Google announced updates to the Promotions tab, including the option to sort promotional emails by “most relevant” instead of “most recent.”

This sorting option considers brands and senders recipients engage with frequently. Gmail also introduced reminders that highlight upcoming deals and time-sensitive offers.

These changes were initially announced for personal Gmail accounts on mobile, so availability and the experience may vary. For your business, this gives subscribers another way to discover your promotions without moving them to Primary.

Explore Gmail Promotions annotations

Did you know Gmail can display special offers, product images, and discount details directly in the Promotions tab? With email annotations, subscribers may see this information before they even open your message.

Google supports four types of annotations:

Single image previews: Showcase a product or promotional image.

Product carousels: Display multiple product images that subscribers can browse.

Deal annotations: Highlight discounts, promotional codes, and offer details alongside your subject line.

Deal cards: Show a visual summary of your offer, potentially including a button linking to the promotion.

For example, the screenshot below shows green promotional badges next to emails from Urban Outfitters and NATORI, highlighting a 20% discount and a free shipping offer. These details help customers spot promotions without opening the messages.

Gmail displays promotional deal badges for Urban Outfitters and NATORI, highlighting a discount and free shipping offer. Image source: Author’s inbox.

To use annotations, you’ll need to add structured code to your email’s HTML. Keep in mind that Gmail decides whether to display annotations based on factors such as quality filters and frequency limits. Adding them also won’t change which inbox tab your email lands in.

Give important campaigns a second chance

If an important announcement or limited-time offer gets little attention, consider resending it to subscribers who didn’t open the original message.

Wait a few days before sending a follow-up, and try a different subject line to give subscribers another reason to open it. Avoid repeatedly resending the same campaign, as too many emails could frustrate recipients.

Keep in mind that open tracking isn’t always accurate, so someone marked as a non-opener may have already read your message.

A resend won’t change Gmail’s categorization, but it gives your campaign another chance to reach subscribers who may have missed it the first time.

How to measure whether your emails are getting seen

You can’t directly measure how many subscribers received your email in Gmail’s Primary tab versus Promotions through standard email campaign reporting.

Instead, look at how people respond after receiving your messages.

Here are the metrics worth monitoring:

Click rate: Shows how often recipients click links in your emails. Compare campaigns to see which topics or offers attract interest.

Unsubscribes: Help you identify messages or sending patterns that might not match subscribers’ expectations.

Spam complaints: Show when recipients actively report your emails as unwanted. Watch for increases that could harm deliverability.

Bounces: Help you spot addresses that couldn’t receive your messages, including permanent failures that need attention.

Opens: Provide another way to compare campaigns, but treat them cautiously because privacy features and automated image loading can make open rates less reliable.

You can review campaign performance through email reporting tools. Look for trends across multiple campaigns rather than making decisions based on a single send. For example, if clicks remain steady despite fewer recorded opens, don’t immediately assume Gmail’s Promotions tab is responsible.

Google also warns in its sender guidelines that low open rates alone aren’t reliable evidence of spam classification or deliverability problems.

Improve your email deliverability with Constant Contact

You can’t decide which Gmail tab your emails land in, but you can take steps to protect your sender reputation and give subscribers more reasons to engage. Constant Contact brings the tools you need together in one place.

Start with email authentication to help verify your business domain. Then, use our email editor to customize your sender name, subject lines, preview text, and email design. You can also preview your messages on desktop and mobile or send test emails before launching a campaign.

Our contact management and segmentation tools help you reach subscribers based on their interests and engagement, while email scheduling makes it easier to maintain a consistent sending routine.

After each campaign, email reporting lets you monitor opens, clicks, bounces, and unsubscribes. You can review addresses recommended for removal, while built-in SafeUnsubscribe helps manage opt-outs and prevents further sends to unsubscribed contacts. Eligible plans also offer automated resends to non-openers, giving important campaigns another opportunity to get noticed.

While these features can’t guarantee Gmail Primary placement, they help you follow better sending practices, maintain a healthier email list, and understand what interests your audience.

And if your emails continue landing in Promotions? Don’t worry. As long as they reach subscribers who want them and generate engagement, you’re on the right track.

Start your free 30-day trial of Constant Contact and get the tools you need to send emails your subscribers want to read.

FAQs

Do plain-text emails stay out of the Promotions tab?

Google doesn’t identify plain-text formatting as a way to guarantee Primary placement. Choose a layout that’s readable and appropriate for your message rather than removing images or formatting solely to influence Gmail.

Can I see which Gmail tab my subscribers’ emails landed in?

Not through standard email marketing reports. You can check placement in your own Gmail account, but that doesn’t reveal how Gmail categorized the message for every recipient. Focus on campaign engagement and deliverability metrics instead.

Does adding my email address to contacts guarantee Primary placement?

Google says messages from addresses saved in a recipient’s contacts are less likely to be marked as spam. Adding a sender to contacts isn’t the same as moving their emails to Primary, and neither action guarantees permanent placement.

Can subscribers turn off the Promotions tab?

Gmail users can customize which categories appear in their Default inbox or switch to another inbox layout. However, businesses can’t change these preferences for subscribers.

You’re running a weekend promotion for your small business, so you email your customers with a special offer.
