Frequently asked questions
There’s more to a great-looking email than meets the eye. Beyond visual appeal, your email needs to deliver value to your recipients with helpful content and make sure your business looks good on any device.
Here’s how to create an email design that looks polished and professional, every time:
Give your content a job to do: What information are you trying to share? What action do you want your reader to take? This will help you choose the right template and layout.
Choose a customizable template: Select a mobile-responsive template that gives the right structure for your message, whether you’re sending a shopping reminder or a fundraising email. Drag and drop content where you like, add spacing between text and images, and customize elements till your email is exactly how you want it.
Put your own spin on it: Add your logo, change colors to match your branding, and set consistent colors and fonts you can apply to every email.
Optimize text: Use default text sizes (14-16px for body, 22px for headlines), web-safe fonts, and keep your email concise. Consider bulleted lists or Read More blocks for large chunks of information.
Use images wisely: Customize images from the stock image gallery, link them to your website, and use animated GIFs sparingly, as they can have loading issues and slow down your send.
Give readers a next step: Use buttons for a clear call-to-action, but don’t overwhelm the reader by giving them too many actions to take. Remember, you don’t want to detract from your main goal, like making sales or driving signups. You can also add clickable icons to drive traffic to your social media presence and website.
Preview and test: Check how your email looks on desktop and mobile, and send test versions to yourself or trusted reviewers.
Yes, Constant Contact's email templates are designed to be mobile-responsive and look great on all devices. While we don’t control how templates appear in different browsers and modes, mobile devices in dark mode will automatically invert the colors of your email for readability.
With the drag-and-drop builder, you're working with pre-made content blocks that you can arrange visually. It's easy, fast, and you don't need to know how to code.
HTML templates are best when you want total control over the code. You can customize everything, but you'll need to know your way around HTML and CSS. Plus, be prepared to test your template across different email clients.
Generally, images that are 480 pixels wide or greater will fill the width of the entire screen when viewed on mobile. But, if you don’t want your image to span that entire width, simply change the dimensions in the image editor. Here’s how:
Click the image and select Edit.
Use the Transform icon and check "Lock Resolution."
Set the width to less than 480 pixels (150-250 pixels recommended).
Export and insert the image you resized.

Yes, how you design emails can impact how it shows up in peoples’ inboxes. Here are a few tips to maximize your email deliverability and get your message seen:
Avoid image-only email design, as they can trigger spam filters.
Aim for a balance between images and text, such as 1 image per 20 lines of text.
Check your image sizes. Large images can slow down your email loading times.
Preview and test your email across different devices and clients (like Gmail versus Apple Mail).
